3D printing trends in rapid manufacturing for the automotive industry as experienced by HLH Prototypes

3D printing is everywhere these days: articles, social media, mergers, buyouts, emerging 3D printing technologies – it is the future of manufacturing today. But just because it is everywhere, does that mean that you should jump on board with your project? HLH does a lot of rapid prototyping and low-volume manufacturing projects for the automotive world using traditional rapid prototyping technologies and newer 3D printing additive manufacturing technologies. This presentation will offer some examples – based on HLH's experience – of the rapid manufacturing project trends the company is seeing in the automotive industry.

Nostrum will be showcasing a full water injection system for on-road, off-road, stationary and research engine applications. Nostrum water injection systems provide knock mitigation, octane on demand and NOx management for performance, efficiency or commercial engine applications. Nostrum’s vehicle-integrated water injection system relies on a proprietary standalone water injection controller and water injection control strategies. The water injection firing events can be tied to the fuel injector firing events or controlled by more conventional crank-angle-based injection control strategies, allowing water injection to be adapted to virtually any engine application.

Powder metallurgy for automotive applications: status, perspectives, innovation by additive manufacturing

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a reliable source of parts for automotive applications (worth €6bn in Europe). Metal powders compacted and densified into net-shaped, high-tolerance metal parts, from small lots to millions, often represent the optimal solution. The use of powders facilitates the race toward innovation: PM will be an important technology with the foreseen rise of electric vehicles and the need for functional materials for energy storage and conversion. Metal additive manufacturing techniques offer new chances for disruptive product design and will play a key role in the car of the future.
