Œrlikon Balzers will demonstrate its metal injection molded components that can effectively reduce engine weight, manufactured for motorsport.
Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) enables small metal components to be produced very close to their final contours. This well-established manufacturing method for precision parts is used in a multitude of applications. Especially complex geometries can be realised for engine components in the fuel injection, combustion or valve field by using high temperature resistant alloys.
Due to the wide variety of usable materials, outstanding design possibilities and good mechanical properties can be reached.
The valve cam follower – as a primary part of the valve gear - is needed to transmit the circular rotation of the cam shaft into upward/downward movement of the valves. Thanks to MIM technology, a complex but also lightweight geometry of this component was achueved. This increased efficiency and reduced translatory inertia at the same time as maintaining higher engine performance.
